MY Journey…

MY Journey

Rediscovering Africa’s hidden treasures

My earliest memory of what I wanted to be when I grew up was an archaeologist. As a young girl growing up in Soweto, I found myself captivated by the adventures of Indiana Jones. His wild journeys across places like Timbuktu and Egypt felt like an untold part of my own legacy. I watched in awe as he uncovered hidden treasures and explored grand cultures.

This wasn’t the Africa I knew – the one often depicted in news headlines as barren, struggling, and politically turbulent. This was a world of opulence, mystery, and ancient grandeur, filled with forgotten stories of kings and queens, much like the lavish world of Cleopatra, who enchanted my imagination with her commanding presence.

As I began my career in design,

I would often lose myself in the research of Africa’s past, tracing the origins of forgotten cultures and ancient design practices. Yet, I would always be pulled back into the fast pace of client deadlines and modern trends, gradually losing sight of the deeper questions that had once fuelled my curiosity.

There was a time when I stepped away from design altogether. I felt disconnected, adrift from the essence of what had drawn me into this field. But in my pursuit to understand the spiritual meaning of design in Africa and how it connects us to our creations – I uncovered something more profound…

My True Calling…

I realized, was not just in designing spaces but in digging deeper into the past, to unearth the legacy of African design and share it with others.Today, I stand as a designer as well as a storyteller and curator of Africa’s creative spirit.

Through Ditau, I seek to bring forth the stories that have been long forgotten, offering a glimpse into the soul of the continent through design. Each concept, each piece, is an invitation to journey with me into the richness of our heritage – a place where the past and present dance together in harmony.
